A Sunday night MLS matchup between Minnesota United and Sporting Kansas City ended in dramatic fashion.
Matches have been cancelled and it seems like a minor miracle there are games being played at all. The fact there is indeed competition on the pitch has led to some exciting matchups.
Perhaps the best so far came Sunday night with Minnesota United taking on Sporting Kansas City. Kansas City seemed to have the game locked up until an utter collapse in stoppage time that saw Minnesota score twice to take home the victory.
A late Minnesota United comeback carried the day.
The unique thing about playing in front of no fans is the lack of a loud reaction when something important happens. Yet it clearly did not matter for the Minnesota United players, as they reacted just the same when the go-ahead goal went into the net.
Sporting KC was down to 10 men but seemed to do enough to at least take home a draw. But Minnesota finally used its advantage late and provided sports fans with some excitement on a Sunday usually reserved for baseball this time of year.
The MLS tournament is still in its early stages and there may have to be further changes if more teams are forced to leave or if more matches are cancelled. All fans can do is enjoy the games that are played and Sunday night showed the power of sports, even if there aren’t fans in attendance.
Minnesota United went from losing to picking up a much-needed win not only to boost spirits, but to continue fighting for the tournament crown after finally making the postseason in 2019.
